ABOUT ME
Dor Gidon Amran, born in 1999 in Beer Sheva, is an Israeli classical mandolinist, conductor, and a pianist. He holds a bachelor's degree in mandolin playing which he earned under the guidance of Mr. Jacob Reuven at the Jerusalem Music Academy (JAMD), where he also did his graduate studies in Prof. Eitan Globerson’s conducting class.
He started his musical journey at the Beer Sheva Conservatory studying mandolin Mr. Lev Khaimovich & Mr. Teddy Shushankov), piano (Prof. Faina Eisenberg & Prof. Raymonda Sheinfeld), and composition (Dr. Marina Geller). Amongst many musical accolades, he has also received the honorable special title of "Excellent Musician" while serving in the army. During his studies, Dor worked as a mandolin and music theory teacher at the Beer Sheva Conservatory and as a Piano accompanist for voice lessons and for the opera productions at JAMD.
He has worked as an assistant conductor alongside great conductors such as Omer Meir Wellber, Yuval Zorn, Giuliano Carella, Karl Heinz Steffens and Dan Ettinger in symphonic and opera productions - The Magic flute, Aida, La traviata, The Tales of Hoffmann, Die Fledermaus and Don Giovanni. In addition to being an assistant conductor, Dor often plays as a soloist with several orchestras in Israel such as the Israel Sinfonietta Beer Sheva, Raanana Symphonette, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, Barrocade, and the Israel Symphony Orchestra. He is also successfully establishing himself as an arranger in Israel while working with several chamber orchestras, and is the arranger for "The Israeli Mandolin Soloists Ensemble". Moreover, Dor is a faculty member and participant of the Rhode Island Guitar & Mandolin Festival at the University of Rhode Island, USA.
Dor has won the American Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship every year since 2016, the plucked instruments competitions at JAMD between 2018-2021, "Sarni" competitions at the Beer Sheva Conservatory in 2014 and 2016, the national competition named after "Paul Ben Haim" in 2018, the Chamber Music Competition named after "Dina Turgeman" in 2021 and the Second prize at the International Mandolin Competition in Modena, Italy. He has also performed as a member with various mandolin quartet/orchestras in Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Belarus, USA, Belgium, and Spain. He has also been a soloist in Moldova and at the Paganini Genova Festival.
In June 2024 he recorded on his mandolin Paganini’s 24 Caprices for Solo Violin under the Italian label “Dynamic”. This was the first time in the world that the 24 Caprices were recorded on a mandolin. He also has been appointed as a pianist accompanist at the Israeli Opera House, after being an assistant conductor there. Moreover, he was accepted to the M.A. programme in Orchestral Conducting at Penn State University for the 2024 Fall intake.
He plays instruments built by the Israeli luthier Arik Kerman.
